Trends and Practices in Social Intelligence

People are connecting to brands, products, and services using a new generation of interactive social software and services. The business owners and budgets for technologies that support marketing are changing the dynamics of traditional information management and delivery.
Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs) are using social software and services technologies such as Social CRM, social analytics, and advanced marketing analytics to personalize shopping, micro-target online advertisement placement, market on mobile devices and with handheld in store devices., engage people across social media, and enable interactive social networking communities.
We will explore how Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and Chief Technology Officers (CTOs) play a key role in supporting CMOs with a wide range of social software applications and enterprise data management services to connect and interact with people across channels and grow the business.
NEW SERVICES ENABLE CMOs TO BETTER CONNECT AND INTERACT WITH PEOPLE
Marketing experts have often reached beyond the enterprise to use marketing agencies and database services for direct mail, research, and analytics. Marketing services such as direct mail, email marketing, and customer surveys are being replaced with online and mobile applications that connect people and gather data at a fraction of the cost and deliver results in significantly less time.
A new generation of cloud-based analytics services and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) provide social software applications and internet data sources that challenge the traditional service lines between conventional external marketing resources and internal Information Technology (IT) services.
CMOs are tapping into a variety of externally hosted SaaS applications such as Google Premium Analytics, Tealium Tag Management System (TMS), or Clara Bridge for advanced text mining and analytics, and Visible Technologies or Radian 6 for social media analytics.
CMOs may also partner with other groups within their organization such as Public Relations, Customer Services, and Corporate Communications who are also adopting these externally hosted services. A common goal across services is to create interactive touch-points across channels such as blogs and social media forums as well as mobile applications. These new services increase an organization's ability to reach people faster and with greater precision because the social software applications gather information about people who participate in online social networks and specialized communities.
Today social media savvy users expect their online experience to be personalized. Social software is used to gather and analyze their social data including demographics, navigation, shared content, comments, and searches. CMOs are increasing their budget and expecting the rapid delivery of business results based on using SaaS and cloud based social software services and data.

IT Salaries Expected to Grow a Bit in 2013

IT professionals looking for a salary increase may be disappointed unless they are a CIO or other IT executive. CIOs and IT professonals are looking forward to increasing salaries in 2013 after years of very small or nonexistent increases. They may have to wait a bit longer.
According to a recent survey from Janco and eJobDescription.com the increases will be modest and IT professionals can expect to see only small gains in the salaries for 2013.The Janco survey data includes data from more than 249 large companies and 785 mid-sized companies.
The 2013 Salary Survey used data compiled from Q4 of last year."Salaries are up 1.98 percent for IT pros in the past 12 months and the big winners are CIOs, especially those in larger enterprises," says Victor Janulaitis, CEO of Janco. Not only are salaries are up, but CIO tenure has gained a month as well, moving up from the previous year's four years and two months to four years and three months.
Here is a summary of the highlights from the survey as presented by Janco:
IT compensation has increased by 1.98% in the last 12 months. Between January 2012 and January 2013 the total mean compensation for all IT Professionals has increased from $77,773 to $79,312. This puts overall compensation back at the levels they were at in January 2008 and 2007.
In mid-sized enterprises, the mean total compensation for all positions has increased by 2.39% from $74,016 to $75,784. In large enterprises, the median compensation has risen from $81,531 to $82,840.
CIOs compensation has increased in the past 12 months - the mean base compensation is higher and bonuses are about the same as received in the prior year. The mean compensation for CIOs in large enterprises is now $182,210 (an increase of 6.04%) and $165,820 (an increase of 1.6%) in mid-sized enterprises.Median CIO tenure has increased from 4 years and 2 months to 4 years and 3 months. This is one of the primary drivers for increased compensation for that position.
Positions in highest demand are all associated with the quality control, records management, data center operations management.Over the long term IT executives have fared better in mid-sized companies than large companies.
In mid-sized companies IT executive salaries have recovered all of the losses sustained in the recession except for only a few cases. In large companies IT executive salaries are just below what they were in 2008.
In 2012 the IT job market grew by 62,500 jobs according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) - not enough to employee the number of IT graduates from US universities or to increase demand.
Lay-offs seem to have tapered off, however some companies continue to cut the size of the IT organizations.
Cost control is still the rule of the day; however we have seen an increase in the number of "part-timers" and contractors who are focused on particular critical projects.
On shore outsourcing has peaked and companies are looking to bring IT operations back into their direct control and reduce operating costs.A number of enterprises are moving help desks and data center operations in-house which has resulted in an increase demand for data center managers.
Mandated requirements for records management systems and electronic medical records have increased the demand for quality control staff and custodians (librarians) of mechanized records.
Companies are continuing to refine the benefits provided to IT professionals. Though benefits such as health care are available to 82%, IT professionals are now paying a greater portion of that cost.

Website Maintenance, or, How Do I Drive This Thing?

Our bread & butter is designing (or redesigning) & programming websites for businesses of various sizes. Our clients range from family-owned small businesses to large financial enterprises. Our projects include content management system-based sites built in WordPress and Drupal and Magento-based E-commerce sites.
These platforms are meant to be more user-friendly than a hard-coded HTML site, allowing a non-technical administrator to easily input and edit content, products, images, and text. Since we do not build cookie-cutter sites, each of our websites are unique and are built with customized backend functionality. There is a learning curve for our clients based on various factors including the technical proficiency, familiarity and comfort level of the designated site administrator in the company as well as the complexity of the theme and functionality of the site itself.
Once we have built your sparkling new, feature-rich website, think of it like a Ferrari. You will need to gain some skills in order to learn how to properly drive it without crashing. You will either need to dedicate some time to learning some new skills or you will have to set aside a monthly budget for site maintenance. Some of your maintenance options are:
We can manage content for you on a retainer or as-needed basis.
You can hire a dedicated part-time, full-time or freelance webmaster.
You can hire a brilliant young college graduate as your new online intern.
You can hire an offshore team that works the same crazy hours you do (because we don't).
You can learn some basic HTML. Or go to the codex or help pages for the CMS we've installed for you (WordPress, Drupal, or Magento - all three have extensive help resources). Or, our favorite, when in doubt, type your question into Google and be amazed at the information that appears at your fingertips.
Let's use another analogy: when you own a car, whether Ferrari or Toyota, it will require maintenance, such as oil changes, new tires, etc. Your website is no different. CMS platforms offer upgrades on a regular basis and you (or your webmaster) should be updating the CMS to the newest version. If your site has plugins, you need to upgrade those as well, but, a caveat here, you need to do a backup first (as a precaution), ideally also set up a dev or staging site (where you can practice and to test runs), then update each plugin one by one, and test to make sure the upgrade is compatible with the site and didn't break the site.
Often, clients come to us pleading for emergency help, "Our website is broken! Please fix it immediately!" What we often find is a result of a mismatch from sites not upgraded conflicting with the hosting environment (which we do not control). Hosting is where your site lives and is provided by a hosting provider. There is hosting software running on the server where your website data is housed.
There are many sources of issues that can crop up from this nexus of the software powering your hosting server / setup & the software powering your website.
Sometimes databases become broken or corrupted, this can be due to problems arising from the maintenance (or lack thereof) of the hosting environment. Sometimes database issues are due to bugs in the original software of your site and can be repaired by database repair tools or upgrades.
Sometimes the problems are due to hacking, another case that underscores the vital importance of maintenance and regular updates to patch security holes. (Security & hacking is a whole 'nother blog post!)
Finally, issues can be caused by someone maintaining your website but not following the CMS instructions. For example uploading non-supported content or an image size that “breaks a page layout.
Our main point with this article is to enlighten you as to the various factors that can affect website function and performance - many of which are out of our direct control (hosting environment, your technical competency, whether your website software is updated, hacking).
Here are the basic points to keep in mind before you commit to a big website overhaul or development project:
Understand that the website is never "done." It will require ongoing attention and care post-launch for the life of the website
Different things can and will go awry unexpectedly for various reasons. Some are preventable, to a degree. Some are not - be prepared.
Set aside budget for a development or "dev" site or a "staging" site that will be a clone of your website and provides a practice area for you as well as a copy of your site.
Commit to a regular backup & restore plan. Ask your hosting company how often they backup hosted websites.
Use a 3rd party to backup your code (codeguard.com or something similar) and/or select a hosting company specific to your CMS (WordPress hosting, magento hosting, etc. It costs more but it may save you in the long run.
Commit additional resources post launch to website maintenance - either money for an external webmaster or identify and train an in-house manager.
Understand that there is a learning curve to managing a robust website.
There are alternatives!
If, after reading this, you realize that you or your small company is not prepared for the ongoing skill, time, and budget investment a robust website or e-commerce website requires, then there other routes you can take. There are plenty of hosted, templated website companies out there (Wix.com, Shopify.com, WordPress.com) that can host and support a simple website with pre-existing templates. Even your hosting company may offer a simple website solution. Why should you use these? They are totally managed by the company that hosts them, upgrades, security, 24/7 customer service.
Of course this begs the question: why use a web design and development firm such as executionists? If you want a website with a unique, branded design and functionality, and your custom URL (not always available with hosted solutions), then you may not get what you want out of an out-of-the-box solution. The websites and work we offer includes: mobile application design, responsive design (mobile-optimized), customized e-commerce solutions, corporate branding, SEO and marketing strategy and more. Also, some of the hosted solutions offer limited functionality & themes and they don't all work on mobile devices.
So think strategically about your commitment to a long-term sustainable, scalable web strategy and ask yourself some tough questions about your priorities before launching into a custom-built solution.
We're here to help and answer any questions.

The Estates of the Future

How much is a digital information worth? How lucrative can a digital enterprise be? Exactly how life-changing and career-threatening can a New Media information be? How expensive can a tweet be?
As for the penultimate question, Mr. Shem Obafaiye of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, fame is in the best position to comment! Long after Mr. Obafaiye embraces mortality, his digital footprints, courtesy of the now-famous interview he granted Channels Television, which has since gone viral with the nomenclature âEURo My Oga at the Top âEURo would remain. I am not attempting a post mortem of what went wrong and how the social form of the new media gave it wings.
Sometimes in February at the Social Media Retreat convened by the UNDP-DGD team, I first heard Tolu Ogunlesi hint at the "eEstate of the future". Therein sits my interest. Any new media professional capable of erasing unwanted information in forms of pictures, videos or posts that are already viral would possibly rank in the highest earner of the future. Kim Kardashian would want videos of her âEUR~sexcapadeâEUR(TM) expunged from the global village; Anita Hogan, back then, would want same with her pictures; ditto the more recent Commandant Shem. As New Media skills and knowledge continue to grow, more people continue to depend on it.
The growing enterprise of the social media is enough call to reflect on the future for individuals, groups and organisations making a fortune off and from it today. When a Twitter "celebrity" dies, what happens to the handle? When a famous blogger becomes deceased, can his or her blog be inherited?
I called a friend to inquire how much a mutual acquaintance of ours bills for tweets? I was shocked to hear that a tweet (a mere 140-character) will cost a minimum of N10,000. Another famous Nigerian blogger charges N50,000 for a sponsored blog post. Basic knowledge of Mathematics will help any mind understand how enormous the social media enterprise is today. So, what happens to these digital estates when these folks inevitably wave good bye to the planet?
In 2004, about six years after the death of business mogul and winner of the 12th June 1993 presidential election, Bashorun Moshood Kasimawo Abiola, his estates were still being contended for in court. More recently, the family of the late Eze Gburugburu of Igbo land, Odimegwu Ojukwu, also became submerged in controversies trailing the wealth-sharing approach of the late Igbo leaderâEUR(TM)s extensive wealth. With several Twitter "warlords", expansion of the clan of blog "landlords" and individuals with colossal "like" figures on Facebook, I possibly will envisage that litigation of the future would be digital estate-related. Inferentially, the most popular and wealthy lawyers might be those with knowledge and specialisation around this.
As it stands, my profile pictures on Facebook would outlive me, thatâEUR(TM)s assuming Facebook exists for several more years! If Twitter stands the test of time and decides on preservation, our tweets would be there for our grandchildren to peruse! Even if they never met us, they would have a close-up idea of what our thoughts were and what our interests were while we were here. Scary?
If it is to you, then you need to embrace this reality by preparing for your digital after life. About a year ago, I had meticulously composed and posted a birthday message on a friendâEUR(TM)s wall. We were contemporaries years back as undergraduates. Sadly, he was dead and I had no fore knowledge. A mutual friend quickly sent me a message, asking that I check previous posts. Alas, it was that of commiserations: one alluding to the celebration that would have been if he was alive; needless to say that I quickly deleted my âEUR~insensitiveâEUR(TM) post. There are currently a little more than 30 million dead people with accounts on Facebook globally.
The concept of digital estate and asset includes all files that are in the digital format. These include our documents, pictures, videos, emails, text messages and audio files. It however extends beyond online materials; it includes the digital tools we use to store our information. Our smart phones, tokens, tablets, laptops and desktop systems are also part of our digital estate. It is the worth that however differs from individual. Several parts of our financial life are now digital. That almost-finished memoir or novel is also in digital form.
These tools and platforms have become a huge aspect of our everyday life. Active users have tonnes of information there. Imagine the worth of a journalistâEUR(TM)s SIM with several contacts on it or that of a business man with numbers of thousands of viable business partners and contacts. What happens to our lines after our demise is not something we spare thought for. If truly academic courses are meant to be drawn from society concerns, then itâEUR(TM)s time our academic institutions began courses in cyber anthropology to unpack this new paradigm. Despite the policies of several social media on how to access the accounts of dead ones, there is still the need for a digital will. We need to deeply understand that whatever we make available on the Internet has the capacity to outlive us. If a man has a million followers on Twitter with huge earning capacity and he dies, my theory is that it should be possible for such person to will the followership to an heir. Twitter would then ensure that no one can unfollow such account for a least a month. During this period, the new handler would pitch himself a worthy heir. Thereafter whoever wishes to unfollow can do so. Twitter then allows him merge the followership with his own already existing account if he so wishes.
The solution lies in listing all our digital assets and how to access them on a word document and have it pass-worded and thereafter emailed to a trusted friend/family member. The "super password" can then be left with another trusted person. That creates a two-level security for it. The bank safe deposit box can also be used for this. The solution to unlocking our digital empire lies in granting access. There is currently no serious legislation around this because New Media is ahead of the law especially given its constant evolution. Beyond the asset values of our digital life, we may love to have it preserved for memorial purpose.
No healthy person prays to die but it inadvertently will happen. When you begin to see posters on the streets and advertorials in the dailies inviting you to a digital death summit, then know that the emergent culture that is New Media now has deeper root than you can only best imagine.
